Cambridge University Health Partners (CUHP) is leading the formation of a new consortium focused on developing AI solutions to spiralling clinical trial costs and poor success rates.
Building on the discussions at CUHP and the Cambridge Centre for AI in Medicine’s (CCAIM) AI for clinical trials event, CUHP has gathered further input from across the Cambridge ecosystem and developed a proposal for the new consortium: ClinSilico.
The ClinSilico founding partners, CUHP (University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge University Hospitals, Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust), CCAIM, Pistoia Alliance and the UK Centre of Excellence on In-Silico Regulatory Science and Innovation, are excited by the opportunity to develop solutions that deliver lasting value to consortium members. Together, the partners provide the expertise, capabilities and networks needed to accelerate the development of advanced in-silico tools including:
- A range of digital twins
- Patient recruitment tools
- Adaptive trial design tools
- AI clinical trial agents
Technical development will be led by Professor Mihaela van der Schaar’s team at The Cambridge Centre for AI in Medicine with input from regulatory experts to help ensure tools are compliant with regulatory frameworks.

ClinSilico has multiple unique elements which we believe will accelerate impact for consortium members:
Data sharing: AI tools will be built and trained on real world data from past clinical trials shared by members
Integrated approach: Tools will operate as a continuously learning system not ‘add ons’ to improve clinical trial decision making and outcomes
Regulatory aligned: Collaboration with the UK Centre of Excellence on In-Silico Regulatory Science and Innovation will help ensure tools are compliant with emerging global regulatory frameworks
Co-created with patients: ClinSilico will use an established Cambridge-developed online platform to engage patients and the public with the tools
Cambridge ecosystem: CUHP will facilitate connections and access to the Cambridge ecosystem including the Eastern England Secure Data Environment, AI ethics expertise and access to high-performance compute
